Whenever you’re looking to find new private label products, search for items that have the following attributes:
Small and lightweight
Your product should be able to fit into a small, flat-rate box (8 11/16″ x 5 7/16″ x 1 3/4″) and weigh no more than one or two pounds.
This helps you save on shipping both from the manufacturer and later when it is fulfilled (either by you or by Amazon FBA).
Your product’s sales should NOT be season-dependent.
Examples of seasonal products include Christmas lights, Valentine’s Day gifts, winter clothing, etc.
Avoid these whenever possible.
Legal and Regulated
Certain products like food, toys, and batteries come with “red tape” that can make selling that product difficult.
I recommend that you stick to stuff that’s easy to manufacture and distribute; items that don’t require a lot of legal paperwork and/or certifications.
Electronics can be fun to sell, but they often come with a lot of headaches and customer service issues.
The same is true for fashion and clothing products, which may require you to have multiple colors and sizes for a single SKU.
Conduct Market Research
Any private label products you have in mind require extensive market research to determine whether or not it’s worth selling.
In the past, we use to do it with a spreadsheet, and a lot of time was spent staring at product listings.
Nowadays there are smart AI applications such as Jungle Scout’s Chrome Extension, designed to research products almost instantly.
Here’s how it works:
– Perform a search on Amazon.com using your product idea as a search term.
Ex: look up “copper measuring cups.”
– After the search results page loads, click the “JS” button to the right of your browser search/address bar to open the Jungle Scout Chrome Extension (you will need to have purchased and downloaded the extension for it to work).
– Verify the product’s data – the extension will show you the average monthly sales, average reviews per product, etc.
You’ll also need to know what sort of selling criteria to aim for.
In general, I recommend products that sell an average of 250–400 units per month.
Also, you don’t want too much competition when you introduce a new product.
Therefore, make sure that the average number of reviews for a product is less than 100.
Find a Private Label Manufacturer
Consider your private label manufacturer as a business partner rather than a provider.
Any initial investment in private labeling is significant, so make sure your manufacturer is reliable and trustworthy.
Finding a reliable manufacturer can be time-consuming if you don’t know where to look.
One of the best places is Alibaba as they hold not just manufacturers but also information about them and customer reviews.
Some quick research on Alibaba – the Amazon of China – will let you know how easy it is to find a private label manufacturer for your product ideas.
You can use Alibaba’s product categories to make your research easier.
Once you’ve found manufacturers in your niche, the first step is to ensure product quality.
Then, check the company’s MOQ, production capacity, and shipping costs/time – to you, to your online platform (Amazon, Shopify, etc), or directly to customers.
Overall, Alibaba allows retailers to purchase wholesale and bulk products directly from overseas manufacturers.
Not only is Alibaba easy to use, but it’s safe too, all producers on their platform are thoroughly checked.
Here are 3 simple steps to find private label product suppliers on Alibaba:
1. Create a buyer account on Alibaba.com.
2. Perform a search for your product on Alibaba.
3. Send a message to the product supplier/manufacturer requesting more information about the product.
Ask the following:
– What is the price per unit for this product when I order 500 units (or however many units need to be ordered)?
– Can I have a sample shipped to my location? If so, what’s the cost?
– What payment terms and methods do you accept?
– How can I customize this product?
In general, you should reach out to 3-5 suppliers for any new private label product you want to sell.
Then, order a sample from each supplier that gets back to you.
One mistake you should avoid is going with the manufacturer that has the lowest cost, even if your communication with the supplier is stellar.
Obviously, you want costs to stay low; yet sometimes the cheapest product isn’t always the best product.
Instead, I recommend using the lower price quotes to help negotiate prices down with manufacturers that have better products and fulfillment skills.
Create Your E-commerce Site, Logo Design, and Packaging.
Since it’s a private label product, you can put your own logo on the packaging and the product.
If you’re not handy with graphic design, start with an inexpensive graphic designer.
Ask them to design an eye-catching logo for your products, or design one yourself on freelance sites, such as Jungle Market.
Also, make sure the design of your private label product is a little different than the others already on the market.
You don’t have to be an engineer to customize your products as the chance can be as simple as changing the product’s color or making a product’s handle a bit longer.
Finally, offer the best packaging you can as thoughtful packaging improves the overall customer experience.
Finally, put your brand’s website URL and other helpful information on your packaging, to improve your marketing effort and coverage.
Determine Your Fulfillment Strategy
Of course, knowing what to sell and how to manufacture private label products is only half the battle.
The other half of the business is getting your products to the customers.
Unfortunately, when it comes to private labeling—besides offering a great customer experience—you have to care about things like shipping cost, shipping time, and minimum order quantity.
A product may seem cheap at first, but you have to consider the shipping cost and import taxes to get it:
– To your own eCommerce business on Shopify or any other platform
– To Amazon fulfillment centers if you’re an Amazon FBA seller
– Directly to your customers if you have a dropshipping business
Thus, one of the first things you need to look at when sourcing for private label manufacturers is the shipping cost.
You can also contact the seller directly to see what the shipping time and production capacity are so that you won’t have any surprises.

The next thing you need to pay attention to is the Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ).
The good thing is that most manufacturers on marketplaces like Alibaba have a Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) for all their product listings.
The MOQ is something that can affect the overall cost of the products you order.
Thus, you need to make sure that a) you need that specific quantity and b) you can cover the cost and still have a good profit margin.
But keep in mind that when it comes to private labeling, you have to pay for the goods you’re going to order upfront.
There are tons of ways you can fulfill your orders.
Some people fulfill their own goods from their garage or even their own warehouse.
Others use third-party fulfillment centers to ship their goods.
I personally recommend Amazon’s internal fulfillment service: FBA.
Since its introduction in 2008, FBA’s been a game-changer for Amazon sellers.
For once, Amazon handles your products to perfection.
Second, they give you access to over 2.5 billion monthly shoppers.
All you have to do is send your inventory to an Amazon warehouse.
From there, the company stores, picks, packs, and ships your goods for you.
On top of that, they also handle the entire customer support service.
Create Your Amazon Listing
It takes roughly 3-4 weeks for a manufacturer to create a product, and another 1-2 weeks to ship it to the seller or the nearest Amazon fulfillment center.
That 4-6 week period is great to create your Amazon listing.
First, before creating your Amazon listing, make sure you have everything needed to publish and launch in advance.
Second, great product photos are a must; and, unless you have some serious photography skills, hire a professional photographer.

Third, the title. The title is one of the most important elements of your Amazon private label product listing.
It’s what helps Amazon determine where your product should be seen in its database.

Fourth, follow that set of keywords with the secondary and tertiary keywords you want to rank for as well.
Lastly, incorporate your products’ strongest features and benefits in the product description field and bullet points.

How to Price Private Label Products on Amazon
A question I am often asked is how to price products effectively on Amazon.
Most new sellers instinctually set a very low (or even the lowest) price point for their product, but that’s a big mistake.
Never set your private label product’s price so that it is priced lower than your competitors’.
Instead, try to make your product stand out in other ways such as:
- better product design
- eco-friendly packaging
- clever marketing language
- killer customer service – before and after-sale
Still, as a rule of thumb, you should try to keep your price point within 20% of your competitors’ average sales price.
For example, if “copper measuring cups” are selling for around $25.00 on Amazon, do not price yours less than $20 or higher than $30.
If it’s less than $20, it can be difficult to turn a profit after you subtract out the cost of goods and advertising expenses.
On the other hand, if you go above $50, you leave yourself open to slower conversion rates and bad reviews from value-based scrutiny.
Ex: “How can I customize this product to differentiate it from the large pool of competitors?”
Optimize Your Listing to Increase Sales
While much of the Amazon FBA private label selling process is “set it and forget it”, you still want to make sure your product listing is doing everything it can to earn sales.
Use Amazon’s internal advertising system – Amazon PPC, an awesome way to draw attention to your private label product.
With Amazon PPC, you bid on “sponsored ads”, and these ads help your product appear on the first page of search results, on remarketing ads outside of Amazon, and even on your competitors’ product pages.
You can run reports via Amazon Seller Central to find out the keywords that are selling/converting, helping you determine the keywords to bid on via PPC.
Also, you can use Jungle Scout’s Keyword Scout tool to see what keywords your competitors are using to make sales.
After a few weeks of tweaking and adjusting your bids, you can double – even triple! – your Amazon sales.
Once you get comfortable with Amazon PPC and the Amazon sales process, you can use other tools to run tests on the effectiveness of the various elements of your Amazon FBA private label product listing.
When split testing, you run two concurrent tests featuring small changes to your product listing (eg. main image, price point, etc.).

Pick a niche and find out what’s selling
Analyze keywords that have been used in search engines related to your niche, see how they are trending, and get an idea of who you’re up against in the competition.
You also need to know the best sales channels for your target market.
Contact manufacturers and get samples
You want to work with the best manufacturer for your needs and product.
Don’t settle for just anyone and check all samples that you receive with attention.
Would want to buy the product yourself – as in, is the standard high enough for you?
Report faults back to the manufacturer and see how they react. Are they willing to fix it?
Always start with smaller quantities -you don’t want to be stuck with thousands of products before you know if and how well they’ll sell.
Create a business plan that includes manufacturing, shipping, and return costs
While you’re waiting for samples and the rest of your inventory to arrive, you should create a business plan.
Include all costs, from manufacturing to shipping and potential import taxes.
This will help to give you an idea of what your profit margins should be.

Here’s another thing to do while waiting for your stock to arrive.

Don’t publish anything yet, but have it ready for your store’s grand opening.
Launch your private label business. It’s go-time!
Get ready for your first orders – consider offering prime shipping for the first 50 or 100 new customers for example.
Make sure to keep optimizing your store and spreading the word to attract new customers.
And don’t forget to be on top of customer service at all times.
It’s unlikely that you will score many sales in your first business days or weeks. And that’s totally normal.
Make sure you keep your cool and continue with your marketing efforts – no customer base was built in a day.
If you feel like a particular campaign isn’t working or gaining any traction, switch your approach. Many successful brands have pivoted.
Put in the sweat and hard work, and you will be reaping the rewards of your first 10, 100, and 1,000 sales.
